Martha Jones (of Amelia County, Virginia) is recognized as the first Black woman to receive a U.S. patent, granted on May 5, 1868 (No. 77,494), for her "Improvement to the Corn Husker, Sheller". Her invention revolutionized agriculture by combining the husking, shelling, and cleaning of corn into one efficient, automated mechanical operation.
- Key Features: The machine utilized spirally arranged knives to cut and separate the husks from the ears of corn in a single process.
- Purpose: It streamlined the labor-intensive process of preparing corn, increasing efficiency during the post-Civil War harvest season.
-
Significance: Her invention not only improved farming techniques but also allowed for the byproducts (husk waste) to be reused as agricultural feed or for filling
Though little is known about her personal life, her patent in 1868 marks a significant moment for African American inventors and women in STEM
